Djouwenkey’s first letters

Subtitle Image Area

Djouwenkey is 5-years old and lives in Batey La Bomba – together with his mother and brother. His family faces economic challenges, as opportunities in the batey are limited and living conditions are difficult. Like many families in the area, access to early education is limited and many families cannot afford to pay for schools supplies or transport to school for their children.

Thanks to the NPH Early Childhood Program, Djouwenkey now attends preschool at NPH, where he receives daily transportation, school materials, a uniform, and nutritious meals. His teachers describe him as a cheerful and creative child who loves to build things with blocks, especially cars. He is currently trying to learn his numbers, and he enjoys exploring shapes, colors, and storytelling.

When he first joined the program, Djouwenkey struggled to write his name — it was long and challenging for him. With patience and the support of his teacher, he learned not only to write his full name but also to recognize more letters and improve his writing skills. His progress is a testament to his determination and the individualized attention each child receives at NPH.

As his teacher says, “without this opportunity, it is difficult for some children to attend school. The parents decide to bring the kids to NPH for them to have a better future”.

Djouwenkey is also known for his kindness and teamwork. He loves to play with other children and often helps a younger girl from his batey during class activities. His teachers describe him as collaborative, friendly, and full of imagination.

Thanks to NPH and its early childhood program, Djouwenkey is able to learn and grow, setting the path for a better future.
